The Café Femenino Project
Out of northern Peru, comes a story of strength, unity and hope for women. In 2003, women coffee growers in northern Peru decided to start their own coffee brand - Café Femenino. Shortly thereafter, the first conference of Women Coffee Producers was held with the objective of raising social standing and promoting leadership for Peruvian women involved in coffee growing and harvesting. Currently, this movement known as the Café Femenino Coffee Project involves over 900 women who participate in farm activities related to coffee production, and includes women's cooperatives in Peru, Columbia and Mexico. Once the coffee leaves the cooperatives, all sales contracts for Café Femenino must be signed and committed by a woman, and a woman must participate in the sales and marketing of the coffee. The US importer of Café Femenino is Organic Products Trading Company (OPTCO) of Vancouver, Washington, who pays above Fair Trade prices for the green coffee to provide additional income for the women coffee producers.

We hope you will share the story of Café Femenino, and become a part of an endeavor that can change the lives and future of women and their families throughout developing nations.
